How Did you Test Lens
First and foremost, I used the lens in the field. Tried it in various light conditions.
Charts measuring sharpness with a distance of 1 meter to the charts
Used the lens at night to see how light sources just outside the frame are handled
Lens Pros
The larger diameter makes handling on bigger SLR bodies very convenient.
It's already sharp in the center wide open. Really sharp.
Little to no distortion. Straight lines will stay quite straight, even at the edges of the frame
Takes (72mm) regular filters
Dispite the wieght this is a fairly small lens
Lens Cons
Flares, reflections, lightsources just outside the frame are the biggest weaknesses for this lens
A lens hood would be nice, but the stock lens hood does not do much to prevent flare
Finding focus through the viewfinder sometimes can be tricky. Everything looks sharp but when viewed at 100% isn't. I recommend live view for accurate focus
Overall Impressions
This must be my favorite Nikon 20mm wide angle prime. Sharp enough wide open but the corners shape up nicely when stopping down 2 stops.
Vignetting is visible in some situations. Again, stopping down about 2 stops solves that.
I have not tried the 20mm f2,8 Ai-S or 20mm f3,5 Ai-S lenses, but the size of the UD-Nikkor is just about perfect when mounted on a gripped body
Final Comments
The Aperture ring is so narrow that I only needed to add a small cam to the aperture ring to make the lens work on Ai cameras. No cutting or swapping of aperture rings needed.
