I'm itching to get into town to shoot the 105 but it is looking like it will have to wait for the weekend. I think I will try shooting both of my copies just to see what if any difference there is between the two.

Thanks Jeff! I wish the weather would have been nicer out today.... it would have been more fun and I think I would have done a better job, but with the wind blowing right thru me I felt rushed and really didn't take my time.

Would love to see how you feel the two copies compare with each other. Should make for an interesting experiment.

    Thanks again,

The 105/2.5 Sonnar formula lens is amazing. Anyone that thinks "Bokeh" is a recent thing: the 10.5cm F2.5 Nikkor-P was designed in 1952 and was undercorrected for spherical aberration by design. This was known to give smoother out of focus areas. The earlier 8.5cm F2 is over-corrected for spherical aberration, which gives a more nervous look.

Thank you Brian! I believe my copy of the Nikkor-P is also of the Sonnar design and have been very pleased with the creamy smooth bokeh it renders. I love the colors and detail this lens presents as well. Definitely a keeper lens for me. The other bonus is that it is extremely light in comparison to my Zeiss 135 APO (not to mention very reasonably priced) which comes in handy when wanting to just go for a long walk without having any specific shooting plans.

I owe a big thank you to Curtis from the "mothership thread" for recommending me this lens. I consider it a must have lens and highly recommend it to everyone.

Thanks Mark for the very kind words! I do love this lens a lot. I hate to admit it, but I almost let it go several months ago, but then thankfully came to my senses and decided it was way too nice of a lens to part with. Boy, I sure would have had regrets selling this one. It is definitely a keeper and is in excellent condition. It felt good to get out with it again today. :)

Thanks for the tip on the 85 f1.4 AIS. I've always heard great things about that lens and now after seeing your recent thread as well as seeing some great sunflower images taken by NightOwl Cat over on the parent forum, I will be on the look out for a minty copy once funds allow.

Thanks for viewing and taking the time to comment!

Thank you Jeff for your very kind words. That's about the best compliment one could hope for and that's exactly how I feel about all of you here. Not only have you all been a great inspiration to me, but I have also learned so much from you all and for that I owe everyone a big thank you!

    Thanks again and best wishes,

We were blessed with absolutely beautiful weather again today and it would have been a sin not to get out and enjoy it. Still had the Nikkor P 105mm f2.5 Nippon Kogaku mounted on the Df so decided to just go out with that. Here are a few from today's walk...The first two are from very early this morning and then the rest from this afternoon.

(for some reason it seems that I can only post two images per post, so I will make a couple of posts)

  • Thanks Jeff! I think you're right...that the 105 would be great at nailing architecture detail. I've done that a little bit in the past with some other lenses, but now that you bring it up, the 105 would be a wonderful choice and a great idea.

Jeff, with you talking about using the 105 for architecture shots, you [b]inspired me[/b ] to take a walk along our main street downtown to see what it could do. We have a lot of old buildings with interesting detail that I think goes unnoticed by most people as they are always in a hurry scurrying to one place or another, never looking up. It was a very cold, cloudy, blustery day with winds gusting to over 30 mph which made me feel rushed as I was cold. I shot these all handheld because it was too cold to take the time to mess with my tripod. Thanks for looking!

  • From my walk downtown today....not architecture but caught my eye non the less....

The first is a mural painted on a brick wall and the second is just a creative sign for a salon/spa downtown.

The Samyang/Ronkio 14mm Ultrawide lens is a true value. This lens is very highly rated for sharpness and apparent megapixels by DxoMark and I found this to be very true when used on the Nikon D810 and also on my Nikon DF. This lens has fast F/2.8 glass with blindingly sharp images and will tap into the higher resolution capabilities of your camera.

You can see samples from it in my blog at RoaringStaR.com or mirrored here on the site. Look for the Abandon House entry as there are quite a few samples posted there. This lens has gorgeous color rendering, especially on blue skys as well. Distortion when shot parallel is very minimal for a low cost lens. The lens is also shipped so you can meter and use the cameras aperture controls.

Keep checking back if this lens interests you and I will post a picture of the lens and some color samples.

Mark, I really like this first photo with trail going off into the horizon and the rich, vibrant colors of the water and sky. Very nice and that lens did well capturing it all.

Here it is mounted on my Df with my Sigma Art 50mm at it's side for size comparison.

Here are a couple of shots with it in a very dimly lit jazz club shot at f2.8 and 6400 iso hand held.

A few things I really like about the version I own is contrast and sharpness. Curtis mentioned the Sonnar optical design has a very pleasant way of rendering OoF elements.

Yes, it is the early Sonnar design and I must say both this and the Nikkor Q135 have some of the creamiest and smoothest bokeh I've ever seen. Fantastic lenses in my humble opinion.

Here is another one of my little buddy taken with this lens...
It was taken in a very dark room with just a little bit of filtered natural light coming in from one window and highlighting his face just right. Plenty of detail showing up in his face and rendering his colors perfectly (at least on my Macbook Pro screen) and wonderful bokeh in the background. EV set at -0-.
I'm very pleased with this lens. Love the lightweightness of it and it looks killer on my silver Df. Haven't used it much lately, only because I've been trying to learn my new Zeiss 135 APO and been needing the focal length of my Sigma ART 50 f1.4 lately.
