This is a great little lens. The first thing that grabbed me is how sharp it is! I have always wanted a 20 MF and while I really wanted to F/2.8 version, this one was reported to be preferred and just landed in my lap in Mint condition.

More on this lens this week, for now, here are a few samples.

You're such a tease Mark, just showing me the door to the Jazzhaus and not showing me the musicians inside. You know I love my Jazz!

Looks like a great little lens. Love the colors you're getting from it, especially with the dress from the post below. Great find!

It's so funny you should comment on the Jazzhause, I immediately thought about you an Ray when I saw it and took it. Lawerence KS is home of Kansas University and the Jayhawks Basketball team for which we root, about 25 miles from good ole Olathe where we live. This was a really fun day for my wife and I. We walked the strip, bought some KU garb for my youngest birthday, had a nice lunch. Anyways, glad you enjoyed and here are a few more and a rare photo of me my wife took during lunch with the 20.

Sounds like you had a great day Mark! That 20 seems like a really fine lens.

Mark, those are some nice crisp colorful shots! I also like that Jazzhaus shot. (I happen to be listening to John Coltrane right now) The main thing that has impressed me over the years about the 20mm 3.5 AIS is the outstanding perfect sunstars it creates. I don't have this lens, but I've seen many examples. There may not be a better lens for shooting into the sun. I may have to pick one of these up soon.

People have not been too high on this lens at times, I happen to think its really good. I will have to take it and the 20UD out for some comparisons. I am confident that one place the Ais excels over the UD is shooting into the sun as you have deftly described! My 45 GN though is absolutely the best SunStar lens I have played with. :)

Yesterday I shot a fast lake pano on my drive in with this lens.

This lens has my interest. Does anyone know if there are any differences between the Ai and Ais version of this lens other than the focus throw? Maybe coatings, etc?

Many thanks!

Don, I'll see if the books have any notes on it later when I have access to them. Shouldn't in theory be much difference. I happened to have picked up the 2.8 model as well, but haven't had a chance to compare yet. Maybe I will pop them in the bag today as I plan to roll with the D810 for a few days.

All the book notes is a wider mounting collar on the AIs vs the Ai. The 2.8 was introduced later in 1984 and has CRC.

Links to KR's take on them.
20 F/2.8 - www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/20f28ais.htm
20 F/3.5 - www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/2035.htm

First thing that grabbed me about the 2.8 verses the 3.5 (from Memory) was that the 2.8 seemed to have more distortion.

I recommend the 3.5 even though the 2.8 is faster your probably going to stop down anyways so not much gain other than it tends to be generally cheaper from what i have observed.

Hi Mark!

Thank you for the links and sharing your experience with the two lenses! I'd like to get a wide lens and am trying to decide between the 20mm f3.5 Ais and the 24mm 2.8 NC. I think my primary focus with this lens would be for landscape shooting from early morning all the way thru early evening.

I really like the Zeiss 21 Zf.2 2.8 a lot but struggling with coming to grips with the cost and these old Nikkors keep surprising me with how gosh darn good they are :)

Thanks again for your help and input!

Best wishes,
No Regrets

I like the 20 3.5 better than the 24 2.8, although that lens is no slouch either! My 24 2.8 has a wobbly focus ring and I intended to perform my own surgery on it to fix it.

The 20mm f/3.5 does really well with the K1 ring. Here is a shot @ f22. Df and K1 ring

A K1 ring is a short extension ring, I think it is 6mm. No linkage to the aperture mechanism. I use one with the Df and the "deckel" adapter for Schneider 85/4 Tele-Arton.

www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf2/macro/index1.htm

I've "accumulated" K1, M2 (26mm extension), E2 (semi-auto aperture), BR-1 (F to S-Mount for a bellows lens, Not the same as an N->F adapter), and BR-2 reversing ring.

I was wondering what the K1 ring was as well. Thank you for telling us about this. See, we learn something everyday :)

Just saw where Brian replied, so I am late to the reply.

So thought I would post a few pictures of the Nikon K Extension Ring Set.

First one is mounted on the subject 20mm f/3.5 lens. You can see how thin the extension ring really is. This allows very close focus with the 20. I was literally in the flowers for the shot that prompted the questions.

Second is all the rings separated and you can use them in any combination you want.

Last pictures shows how they nest together for an easy to carry compact package. I just throw them in any bag I am taking out.

George
